Nigeria ICT sector receives global praise

ABUJA – THE newly-elected Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Houlin Zhao, has commended Nigeria on its broadband policy initiatives and successes recorded in the sector.

According to a statement obtained by this publication from Ministry of Communication Technology, he gave the commendation at the official opening ceremony of Nigeria’s pavilion at the International Telecommunications Union Telecom World in Doha, Qatar.

Zhao in his brief remarks applauded Nigeria for deploying 4G for commercial services.

He said that had put Nigeria ahead of much of Europe and China, seen as powerhouses in the sector.

The statement added that Minister of Communication Technology, Dr Omobola Johnson also showcased success stories and growth of Nigeria’s ICT sector’ to potential investors at the occasion.

The Ministry said Johnson outlined the growth trajectory of Nigeria’s ICT sector and its great investment potentials to discerning investors.

She informed potential investors that Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and also the continent’s biggest economy.

“The Nigerian Government is currently taking concrete steps to diversify her economy, and results are becoming noticeable in key non-oil sectors such as Agriculture, Power, Manufacturing and ICTs,” she said.

“Nigeria thus remains one of the top three destinations for foreign direct investments (FDI) in Africa.

“In fact, Nigeria has attracted the most FDI (foreign direct investment) capital and the second most FDI projects in Sub-Saharan Africa,” she added.

Johnson urged investors to make use of the opportunity presented by Nigeria’s presence at the ITU Telecom World to speak with some of investors and partners.
