SA power supply still constrained

JOHANNESBURG – ESKOM, the South African power utility, said the power system is expected to be constrained for the foreseeable future.

As many industries reopen today after the festive season, electricity demand is expected to increase, the company said, adding next week schools will also reopen and as a result the risk of load shedding was expected to be low to medium during this period.

“The power system remains vulnerable and we urge all South Africans to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly at all times,” the company stated.

Meanwhile, Eskom said it continued to make progress with its programme of planned maintenance but the system remains tight.

“We urge all South Africans to partner with us to save 10 percent of their electricity usage throughout the day,” the company added.

It said this would make it significantly easier to manage the power system during this challenging time, while also enabling us to do planned maintenance to ensure the reliability of its plant.
