White farmers want resolution to SA land question

PRETORIA – SOUTH African farmers, mostly white, called on President Jacob Zuma, to carefully handle the land question in his upcoming State Of the Nation Address (SoNa).

In a letter addressed to President Zuma, AgriSA President, Johannes Moller, said the uncertainty around land reform issues should be resolved as soon as possible.

“From a business perspective, the uncertainty around land reform issues should be resolved as soon as possible with due consideration of economic realities which are fundamental to trust and confidence,” he said.

“In this regard the enhancing of private ownership, security of tenure and allowing for ample growth opportunities for farm enterprises should all be recognised as essential elements of an acceptable outcome of a future land dispensation,” Moller said.

He said AgriSA appreciated the invitation by the president to make public input ahead of Zuma’s State of the (SoNa).

“Considering the current major economic and social challenges government and its social partners are confronted with in their endeavours to stabilise and improve the capacity the economic system and delivery agencies to the meet reasonable expectations of our diverse population, the guidance you will give in your address is of immense importance to all observers, both domestically and internationally,” Moller said.

AgriSA’s concerns were heightened when the ruling African National Congress (ANC) joined the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) calls to acquire land from white without compensation arguing that the so-called willing-buyer, willing-seller has dismally failed as whites always refuse to share the resource with blacks.

But it is the EFF that is open on repossessing the land from the white and equitably redistributes it to both blacks and white farmers without issues around compensation.

EFF also want the mines and banks to be nationalised.
