Moves to ensure safety in petroleum sector endorsed

Nigeria PetroleumrABUJA, (CAJ News) – STAKEHOLDERS in Nigeria's petroleum marketing industry have commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for deploying personnel to depots and tanker farms in the country.

The stakeholders include the Depot Owners Association of Nigeria, Petroleum Tanker Drivers Division, Marine Transport Owners Association of Nigeria and depot managers.

They gave the commendation at the interactive session with Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi.

The Executive Secretary of Major Marketers Association of Nigeria, Obafemi Olawore, said the move would create awareness on minimum safety standards by tanker drivers and consequently reduce in the carnage involving trucks on the highways.

Olawore also expressed confidence in the success of the programme and called on the depot owners and facilitymanagers who were yet to harmonise their operations with the operational details of the officers to do so immediately.

Oyeyemi said deploying officers of the Corps to the depots was to ensure tanker drivers observed minimum safety standards before loading the products.

He said the National Summit mooted the idea.

"In line with the resolutions, we commenced special operations against truck and trailer drivers who operat without observing the minimum safety standard," Oyeyemi said in Abuja.

The Corps Marshal pointed out that the deployment was an interventionist measure that would not involve any financial commitment from the facility managers.

There has been a prevalence of tanker explosions in recent months resulting in loss of lives and property.
