JOHANNESBURG- STAKEHOLDERS have hailed the role played by female professionals in the growth of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector in the country.

The professionals will be celebrated through a female recognition platform that has been launched in Johannesburg.

This pioneering initiative, which is the first of its kind in the ICT sector, will be known as Women in ICT – Partnership for Change Awards.

The platform seeks to not only recognise the role that women are playing to the development of the ICT sector, but is also geared at attracting female professionals to the ICT sector by showcasing available career opportunities in the industry that is still male dominated.

Mteto Nyati, MTN South Africa Chief Executive Officer, highlights the need to change the gender demographics of the sector and ensure women’s contribution to the growth of the sector is acknowledged and celebrated.

MTN has unveiled the awards platform in partnership with Kagiso Media.

“We hope that these awards will grow in stature to become one of the flagship events in the ICT calendar and will further serve to heighten awareness of the transformative role the sector is playing in many areas of the economy,” says Nyati.

Mark Harris, Group Chief Executive Officer of Kagiso Media concurs.

“This partnership on Women in ICT – Partnership for Change Awards is a meeting of minds that mirrors our shared values of using the strength of our brands and platforms to drive positive change.”
The nomination process started on Tuesday while the winners of the nine categories will be announced in Johannesburg on August 31.

The categories are Leadership Recognition, Innovator Recognition, Entrepreneur Recognition, Graduate, Outstanding ICT Professional, Policy maker / Public Sector Awards, Excellence in ICT Jurnalism Award, Community Builder and Lifetime Achiever Recognition Award.
