DURBAN, (CAJ News) – NEDBANK, the financial institution, has condemned the bloody violence that marred a match in a football competition it sponsors in South Africa.

The denunciation comes days after unruly spectators attacked security guards and destroyed broadcasting equipment at the Nedbank Cup semi-final match between Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Chiefs’ 0-2 defeat proved too hard to stomach for some fans. The violence came a fortnight after similar skirmishes at the FNB Stadium in Soweto after Chippa United trounced Chiefs 3-0.

In a statement released by Kedibone Molopyane, Nedbank Group Media Relations, the bank said it was deeply disturbed.

“We don’t tolerate any acts of violence against any member of society and we all have to remind ourselves of our responsibility to uphold the values of our country, and the examples that we set for our youth,” the bank stated.

“We would like to wish all of those affected by the incident a speedy recovery and we are thankful that there are no fatal casualties as a result of the senseless acts.”

Nedbank pledged to work closely with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to do a full investigation on the incidents that occurred and would take the necessary action to avoid a recurrence.

It welcomed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the violence.

Events in Durban overshadowed Stars’ and Maritzburg United’s qualification for the final set for Cape Town on May 19.

United beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 on Sunday.

The winner between the two unheralded sides will represent the country in the prestigious Confederation of African Football Confederation Cup.

“We look forward to an exciting football match and a spectacular event on Saturday 19 May at the Cape Town Stadium,” Nedbank stated.
